Cheap and Chic: Target pencil skirt

Welcome to another round of Cheap and Chic! I talk an awful lot about thrifting, but what about affordable fashion off the rack? Every other week, I'll be bringing you a budget-friendly fashion find and showing you 3 different ways to remix it with wardrobe staples we all probably own. When you're getting dressed on a budget, hunting for deals and remixing are two great tactics.

Mossimo® Women's Ponte Pencil Skirt - Target - $19.99

With back to school around the corner, I have been on the hunt for budget-friendly pieces like this pencil skirt from Target to remix. It comes in a several color options, like plum and mustard, and seems like a steal for $19.99 online. The fabric is a ponte knit, which means figure-flattering, comfortable wear. How could you remix this piece?

Outfit idea - Quirky prep

Tilly's chambray shirt, Old Navy loafer wedges, Dorothy Perkins earrings, and Forever21 necklace.

Try mixing casual with professional, like a pencil skirt and chambray shirt. For a day at the office or internship, add a pair of smart shoes like these wedges from Old Navy. You could also swap them with boots for a more casual look. To make the outfit even a little more quirky, add an unexpected accessory like these gold kitty earrings from Dorothy Perkins. Classic pieces can always be played up with quirky, unexpected accessories.

Outfit idea - Polished in print

H&M peplum top, Zappos ballet flats, and H&M leather bag.

Sometimes life calls for a more dressy outfit, whether you're at work, interning or heading to a classy event. Since a pencil skirt is so classic, it's easy to dress it up for a special occasion. Try adding a bold print top, like this peplum number from H&M. Heels are always a favorite, but opting for comfortable flats can be a smart option if you're going to be on your feet all day or night. Bright accessories and a roomy bag could easily polish off the look.

Outfit idea - Casual, yet classic

On the other hand, a pencil skirt can be dressed down for day-to-day outfits as well. For heading to class, for shopping or catching a movie with friends. Try tucking in a favorite basic tee and adding a denim jacket, like this cropped version from Dorothy Perkins. Keep it seasonally appropriate with flats or sandals, or add a pair of boots like this classic pair of riding boots from JC Penny. I'd add a scarf, chunky necklace, or pretty pendant to polish off the look for a day of classes and meetings.

One budget-friendly skirt remixed 3 different ways. And you could certainly find more combinations with tights, especially as the weather gets cooler. How would you remix a classic pencil skirt?
